On June 22, 2023, the sound installation “Taubes Gestein / Maltreated Rocks” by the two Bonn city sound artists 2023 Roswitha von den Driesch and Jens-Uwe Dyffort will open at the contemporary art biennial in Antofagasta (Chile) Bienal SACO1.1. at the Museo y Ruinas de Huanchaca.
This new work is based, among other things, on the close exchange with scientists of the international research group CRC1211 – “Earth Evolution at the dry limit”. In October 2022, Roswitha von den Driesch and Jens-Uwe Dyffort were able to participate in a field trip ofCRC1211 led by Prof. Tibor Dunai, University of Cologne, which focused on geomorphological developments in the north of the Atacama Desert in Chile.
The investigations of the soil, the microbiological and geological in-situ determinations, the samples of minerals, rock deposits and the cycles of metal raw material trade in this region are now the starting point for the sound installation “Taubes Gestein / Maltreated Rocks”. In addition to the almost 200 years of mining in the region, which is a history of the plundering of natural resources, the two urban sound artists from Bonn are also interested in the tectonic activity of the earth, the subterranean tensions, which are an omnipresent theme in Chile and which accompanied them mentally during their stay.
Processed and alienated on-site sound recordings of a wide variety of sounds and noises that occur when rock and earth crust fracture are the source material for the sound installation that occupies a 30-meter-long shaft-like courtyard in front of the Museo y Ruinas de Huanchaca. This project of “echoes – soundforum bonn 2023” of the Beethoven Foundation for Art and Culture of the Federal City of Bonn can be experienced at the Bienal SACO1.1. until September 2023 in Antofagasta.
